Tonight was the 1st of 8 races at cyclopark at gravesend. Harrison 1st lap was not good as he had a mechanical. With one lap out, he was allowed to continue the race. Tonight he was feeling the effects of an infection that he had earlier in the week and with two laps to go dropped back from the lead pack to finish the race without contesting.
No racing last weekend, so on Sunday Harrison 10 and Aaron Stone 11 complete a 50 mile bike ride in the Lee Valley Youth cycling club colours.
The ride was in aid of the Js hospice in Chelmsford Essex. The ride took them thought beautiful Essex countryside. Both boys got comments from a number of riders on route for calling cars / pot holes and their bike handling skills.
Quite funny at the end when the kind lady from the Hospice thanked them for doing the ride and asked them if they had done the 15 or 35 mile ride for them to both reply at the same time no the 50, her face was a picture of disbelief.
Well done to the Js Hospice for putting on a good event!
Cat C under 12s at Hog Hill for the first of the Summer series. With 49 riders on the start sheet it was going to be a test for each and every rider who pinned a number on, with the long climb every lap this is not the norm for this category. 1st lap a large bunch of around 20 riders formed they climbed well with fresh legs.
Whilst they made it into the centre area together, on lap one an early attack saw the field break up and a group of seven riders formed 6 boys and one girl this group stayed together for the remainder of the race with the strong Girl dropping back a little on lap 4. On the bell there was a massive attack on the front group and four of the six boys went clear down the hill. Aaron Freeman and Harrison had some traffic on the decent and both played it safe which was the right thing to do.
This for me was one of the best races of the early season with the break forming early to take the race to a whole new level, with the riders providing attacks and great climbing it was a joy to watch.
The four leading riders battled hard for the points which went to:
1. Alexi Edwards
2. Thomas Gloag
3. Noah Charlton
4. Owen Williams
5. Aaron Freeman
6. Harrison Powell
|Firstly, the days racing was in memorial to Alan Rosner [1941–2012] who passed away last year after working tirelessly in the cycling community and with Eastern Region Youth & Junior racers. The organisation and racing was a credit to his name and the funds raised will be used to purchase a memorial bench to be placed at Hog Hill where he spent many enjoyable hours watching the action.Alans daughter Nikki had looked after Harrison when he was knee high to a grass hopper at nursery which kinda made this race a bit special for us.
Onto the action with the wind playing its part in this race it took off very quickly Lee Valley found themselves at the front of the field. With Arron Stone, George Pace and H setting a quick tempo. They shook off a few riders but in the main as they faced the wind the group slowed to allow the back markers a place in the bunch.
There were some good attacks by a number of riders but none could form the all important break.
On the bell with the wind at there tails it was up the hill for the finish into the alpine. Harrison got a great start to the hill and looked really strong with William Davis looking tremendous the battle commenced with the pack breaking up into the alpine. Will had got the bit between his teeth and picked up 3 BC points well deserved. Harrison held onto 5th place which was good.
Not much to say really about todays performance, we were entertianed by some close racing on the tight bend. Harrison making a couple of early attacks trying to break the group up on this revised course but these came to nothing with no break forming the race was left was for a sprint finish and a number of boys had sat in the group and waited to contest the sprint. We are still waiting for the results. Harrison was 8th or 9th not sure if there was a lapped rider in the finish bunch.

Hard day at the office with the final round of the Winter in the Park series run by Finish line events.
Harrison competed in this series and started as an under 10s and moved to the under 12s after Christmas. Today was defiantly winter in the Park with Essex full of snow this morning it looked doubtful that H would race. After a few phones calls race on!! Kent had escaped the early white stuff.
Thanks to Chris Bully for picking team Powell up today. We arrived in plenty of time. Setup the LVYCC camp in the normal space however the easterly wind soon changed our mind.
Race started with the under 16s off first followed by the under 12s then the 14s.
In about the first quarter of a lap the pace stepped up with a small group braking away from the main group. Harrison was away with Aron Freeman and an unknown rider. The three stuck together for 3 laps or so the snow started to fall and with that Harrison found the pace too quick and fell back to leave him having a hard solo ride. Aron F and the other rider were left in contention for 1st and 2nd place. With one lap to go Aron broke clear and made his win look easy.
Harrison still out on his own with the early work he had done to secure him 3rd place, LVYCC teammate Aaron Stone was unlucky not to secure 4th place with a sterling ride but settled for 5th after he lost the final climb.
Other LVYCC results were
Lewis B 2nd
Callum B 5th
Mathew Sheppard 6th
well done team LV another demonstration on how to win points for the club.
